HIV/AIDS Awareness, Education and Support Program - Sustainable Piggery Project
Muganza Village, Kigali, Rwanda
Unity Heroes is an initiative of a group of young people associated with Day 4’s Rwandan partners—the Christian Unity Fellowship.
In response to high incidence of HIV/AIDS in their community on Mount Kigali, 21 year old Fred Businge brought together a team of talented young people with the goal of raising the awareness of preventative and medical responses to the HIV/AIDS problem.
Through cultural displays of dance, song and theatre, the team promote good hygiene, explain the nature of transmission of the AIDS virus, ways of preventing infection and living with the virus in individual lives and the community.
The team also support HIV/AIDS sufferers through the development of micro-business fundraising projects.
Due to the stigma associated with the disease in African communities, it is often difficult for sufferers to find work and make a living. Because of limited education, transmission rates are also very high in poverty stricken communities such as that of Mt Kigali.
In a bid to provide sustainable financial support for the Unity Heroes’ awareness and education program, and to provide an ongoing means of income for those suffering from the virus, Day 4 are fundraising for the Unity Heroes’ Piggery Project.
This project will provide a sustainable income through the raising and selling of pigs and pig products in the local community. It will also form the basis of new micro-business piggery projects. Locals suffering from HIV/AIDS being given the opportunity to start their own small-scale piggery businesses.
This project will help to break the poverty cycle in the families of HIV/AIDS sufferers.
Project Funding
This project highlights Day 4 Community Aid & Development’s commitment to developing and funding sustainable community initiatives that have long term scope in alleviating the struggles of some of the world’s poorest, and in the case of HIV/AIDS sufferers and their families, the world’s most marginalised people.

1 -To support and facilitate the development of sustainable community projects that empower communities.
2 -To equip local community leaders with the business structures and the knowledge required to take charge of their own community's future in the global marketplace.
3 -To show respect for indigenous culture, customs, knowledge and expertise in all that we undertake.
4 -To reflect the love and the "Way" of Jesus Christ in all that we do and say and in the way we conduct ourselves in all areas of our work.
