When I was writing Everything Must Change, I became more and more convinced that fair trade or ethical buying will be one of the most important initiatives we can be involved in to address our global crises. On the EMC tour, I talk about the "daily democracy" of voting with green ballots (money) or plastic ballots (credit cards): each time we spend money, we are in a sense voting for a company, saying we believe they deserve to stay in business. The problem is, we often don't know their ecological values or the concern they have for their workers and communities. I was thrilled when Tracy Howe told me about this site which helps buyers learn about exemplary companies which aren't simply interested in the single bottom line of profit, but are concerned about the triple bottom line: economic, social, and environmental sustainability.
