Fugitive Denim: A moving story of people and pants in the borderless world of global trade by Rachel Louise Snyder is a book tracing making a pair of jeans, from the cotton fields of Azerbaijan to the fabric designers in Italy to the clothing designers in New York and finally to the factories in Cambodia and China. Emphasis is placed on the actual cost of making jeans and the people who are trying to work within the system and still provide an affordable product while protecting workers and the environment. She focuses on real people and how company and international policy affect real lives. The book is an easy, engaging read and I don't think I'll be able to buy a cheap pair of jeans again unless I'm shopping at a thrift store.
