This initiative, which you are getting a glimpse of here, is something I have been preparing for my entire life. I have been concerned about issues of justice since childhood. Growing up poor in the rural south and befriended by local farmworkers, I found myself drawn to help those victimized by the actions and attitudes of others. As I grew up and entered the workforce, as a minister and leader in a nonprofit dedicated to serving poor and homeless families, I knew there must be strategic ways to solve the major crises of the day.
I knew environmental degradation had a devastating impact upon the world's poor. I knew poverty was a major cause of many of the world's problems, whether it was the spread of disease, the global sex trade, or war. I also knew that while many religious people were concerned about these issues, some of their leaders were more concerned with building their own kingdoms and influence. I shared my concerns with those around me, including my congregations and coworkers. However, at times I felt helpless beyond just putting band-aids on wounds that needed more care than I was able to give.
Through it all, I found out I was not alone. People were talking, and others (like Brian) were writing. It was time to act. So, I am excited to tell you that this website is the beginning of an initiative to help us put our brains, hearts, and pocketbooks together to get the world off the suicide machine it is on and bring a revolution of hope (as Brian calls it) to the needy, the cynical, and the overwhelmed. Please join us on this journey.
